As part of the ongoing Global Classroom Project 2011-2012 ~ A Glimpse Around the World the November topic was school lunch. The children used Story Kit on their iPods to create a story about lunch in our school. In Story Kit the children take pictures, write text for the pictures, draw, and record their voice. We are sharing our pictures through a Flickr page with children around the world. The links below will take you to some of the books the children created.

I wonder...

As part of the Global Classroom Project- Kids Speak using Voice Thread the children discussed, brainstormed, and came up with "What we wonder about the way people live in different parts of the world". The kids will work together to create a VT introducing themselves, our classroom & our building to our new Global Classroom!

From there, kids from all over the world  will ask each other questions in an authentic way by adding slides to the VoiceThread and commenting back and forth to one another!

Blogging

The children blogged on Edmodo using the iPod touches this afternoon. Each month there will be a new topic for discussion. For October the topic is to share what you do in the fall. Do you celebrate Halloween? Do you have activities that only occur in the fall? Children are asked to write their thoughts using complete sentences with proper capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and spelling. For the first time using the iPods and blogging the children did a wonderful job!

Finally we get to play with the iPods.

iPod Touches

The iPod Touches, wi-fi cart, and laptop were delivered on Monday. Once we have finished loading educational apps and received the gel protectors the iPods will be used everyday. I can't wait!

Anti-Bullying Assembly

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" is a childhood rhyme. Words can hurt all of us though. This morning we participated in an anti-bullying presentation. We shared our thoughts on what bullying is, how it makes us feel, and what we can do.

Area Models

We learned a song that helps us understand how to find area. Then we made area models with a partner and wrote a matching multiplication sentence.

Amboy Wetlands Fieldtrip

We spent Wednesday at the Amboy 4H Center. It was a hot day but about 10 degrees cooler in the shade next to the creek. We caught salamanders, crayfish, a toad, and assorted water bugs under rocks in the creek. When we went in the building to have lunch a four legged creature carrying its home on its back surprised us. It turned out to be a painted turtle that escaped from its container. After lunch we took a walk in the woods and learned about the "toothbrush" tree, the "tea-cher" bird and the "peewee" bird. We spent some time looking for creatures under logs, dead leaves, and in tree bark. Thank you to the parents that helped chaperone our day! It was a wonderful day of exploring and learning!

Third grade Playday

Tuesday morning we took part in the Third Grade Play Day. We played games like twizzle, frisbee golf, and the sack and wheelbarrow race. We also ran the 30 yard dash, 60 yard dash, and relay race. The best part of play day is the last event- the tug-of-war! It was a fun morning with perfect weather. Thanks to all the families that came out to cheer us on!
